Uber Eats is increasingly utilizing four-wheeled robots to manage the final leg of food deliveries. If you’ve recently ordered through the platform, you might have encountered one of these delivery robots. In collaboration with Avride, Uber is deploying autonomous robots in various cities across the U.S., with plans for expansion into more areas in the near future. These compact robots, roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase, can navigate sidewalks at speeds of up to five miles per hour and transport up to 55 pounds of food or beverages.
Equipped with advanced technology such as LIDAR and ultrasonic sensors, they can detect obstacles from 200 feet away and can maneuver through busy environments, recognizing traffic signals in the process. Operating regardless of weather conditions, these robots feature secure compartments that only unlock for customers via the Uber Eats app. With swappable batteries that deliver up to 12 hours of service, they are built for continuous operation. Currently, the robotic delivery service is active in several U.S. cities, including Austin, Texas, which was the first to implement the program.
Cities in New Jersey, such as Jersey City, and various locations in Ohio are also participating. Uber and Avride aim to launch hundreds of robots by the end of 2025, suggesting a likely rollout in your area soon. When ordering in eligible cities, you may have the option to choose a robot for delivery. Upon selection, the app will notify you when the robot arrives, allowing you to retrieve your order.
These robots are versatile, capable of delivering not just meals but also groceries and small packages. Uber’s shift toward robotics aims to enhance delivery efficiency for its 31 million U.S. users. The robots circumvent common delivery delays caused by traffic and human error while enabling faster, safer, and more reliable service. With privacy in mind, the robots do not store personal information, processing only necessary data related to the delivery.
